School field trips are in danger of becoming a thing of the past, according to two local citizens who are trying to get a low-cost group transit pass for schools and daycares.
Schula Leonard, a Burnaby librarian and Sharon Freeman, a Burnaby teacher, are part of a group called the TripEd Committee. The group wants TransLink to OK a low-cost annual group transit pass that would cover students, teachers and support people on educational field trips.

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan calls VANOC’s plan for ‘departure hubs’ in high density residential areas “poorly organized”.
Corrigan says people living near SFU and BCIT may have to deal with a lot of bus noise, on top of school and traffic disruptions during the Olympics.
The ‘departure hubs’ are like transit park-and-rides, taking workers and visitors to Whistler or Cypress (Olympic venues) by bus. Corrigan says VANOC’s plan is to have the buses up and down Wayburne Drive near some high density town house developments. “How would you like to have 100 buses lined up in front of your home at 4 or 5 a.m….returning sometime near 1 a.m., and going all day?”
