Canada Line 1st ride rich with irony

by Stacey Robinsmith
The emailed instructions we received for the Opening Ceremony of the Canada Line informed us that Premier Campbell and Minister Day would be speaking to the crowd of dignitaries and media at YVR-Airport Station Platform at 10:00AM.

Media were directed to park on levels 2 or 3 of the Parkade and to enter the the Canada Line station from the International Terminal Building. The first train was then set to leave the station at 10:30AM.

First off, we found it somewhat ironic that the accumulated masses of VIPs and media all had to drive out to YVR in order to launch a new transit service. And then when we did arrive at the airport most people were completely perplexed about where level 2 or 3 of which Parkade is actually located. Thankfully we saw a CKNW truck pull in and assumed they would know where they were going. We followed them…to the Parkade exit at which point the sweetest parking lot employee directs us both out of the parking we are currently in, with directions to on how to leave this parking lot and how to get into the correct Parkade. We did as we are told, we found the Parkade, parked and hustled into the International Terminal Building.

Inside we quickly see the Private Function sign for the “Canada Line Launch Event” and approach.

A swarm of attendants literally blocks my access to the elevator. Told in no uncertain terms that this is a private function and you are not getting in without your registration. One guy in the background repeats in a very firm tone, “no pass, no entrance.”

After navigating a confusing set of directions to find the ceremony, I finally see the Private Function sign for the “Canada Line Launch Event” and approach.

“Okay, so where do I get my pass?”
