Transit projects across Canada

Proposals from Vancouver to Halifax are taking shape, fuelled by $16 billion in new federal funding for municipal works

Fuelled in part by assurances municipalities will get half — about $16 billion — of the $33 billion the federal government has promised to roll out for infrastructure spending in the months ahead, public transit proposals from Vancouver to Halifax are inching off the drawing board.

In Metro Vancouver and its surrounding communities, a bolstered public transit menu is part of the provincial government’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent over 12 years. The goal is to double the number of transit trips to 400 million a year by the year 2012. The $14-billion plan involves building new light-rail lines, extending existing ones and buying 1,500 buses.
